    • Option 1 - Napa Wine Tasting

      • Description: Join us for a visit to Napa Valley, the most legendary wine county in the world. We will be visiting two breathtaking wineries that will offer an amazing wine tasting experience. Castello di Amorosa, an authentically-styled, 13th century Tuscan castle winery will give you the chance to explore on your own and enjoy the below ground tasting bar offerings. Sterling Vineyards unique attraction is an aerial tram that will carry us up the hill to the winery where we will enjoy a self-guided tour of the lower portion of the winery & scenic views from our terraces, followed by a tasting of their current wines. Snacks and Box Lunch will be provided and you can enjoy any wines purchased on the bus ride home.

    • Option 2 - Alcatraz Prison Island Tour

      • Description: Step back in time and experience the legendary Island that was a Civil War fort, a military prison and one of the most notorious federal penitentiaries in US history. Our trip will include a ferry ride to Alcatraz Island where we can your the Cellhouse at your own pace with the award-winning audio presentation. Stop to picture yourself in a dark solitary confinement cell, hear the stories of life inside from former inmates, and feel the intensity of a prison breakout from correctional officers who lived and worked on the Island.

    • Exploratorium After Dark

      • Description: ​Things look different after dark. Join us and lose yourself in the numerous exhibits exploring perception, art, and science. Grab a drink and get immersed in everything from a pitch-black dome to a fog bridge, a large-scale kaleidoscope, dazzling light displays, mind-bending mirrors, and more. This unique Bay Area experience will change how you think about the world around you. This event is open to all and tickets can be bought at the door. We recommend to get dinner at the Ferry Building before the event to get the full flavor of SF.

      • Description: Let’s look to the future of civil engineering as we learn tips and techniques to reach students in grades K-12. Engage in a highly interactive session designed to bring outreach to life. Refreshments and materials provided. Location will be in a conference room at the hotel. People interested in the Exploratorium After Dark event can head over after the workshop.

Conference Day 2 - Tech Tours from 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm

    • Confidential Corporate Tech Campus

      • Description: North America’s largest cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure is currently underway in Mountain View, California. Scheduled to complete in August 2020, this 32-acre Silicon Valley corporate campus consists of a multistory office space, a theater, a large multipurpose room, a roof garden, a parking garage, a wellness/fitness center, and a soccer field. This exciting, fast-paced, and highly sustainable project will walk you through unique systems being implemented on the job; including black-water, radiant heating and cooling, and thermal exchange storage, to name a few. For confidentiality reasons, no photos are allowed. All attendees must wear sturdy closed-toed shoes. All other PPE (hard hat, safety vest and safety glasses) will be provided onsite.

    • Salesforce Transit Center​

      • Description: The Salesforce Transit Center is a three-story by four block long transit hub which features a 5.4-acre rooftop park that is home to 600 trees and 16,000 plants This hub connects eight Bay Area counties and the state of California through 11 transit systems, including the future High Speed Rail, which will connect San Francisco to Southern California! In addition to being the structural engineer-of-record for the project, Thornton Tomasetti was also the project’s sustainability consultant and helped the project achieve LEED Gold Certification.     • BART Vehicle Maintenance Shop

      • Description: For more than 45 years, BART has provided fast, reliable transportation to downtown offices, shopping centers, tourist attractions, entertainment venues, universities and other destinations for Bay Area residents and visitors alike. Join ASCE on a tour with BART's chief vehicle engineer as we walk through the vehicle maintenance shop and engineering office to observe the operations that keep the Bay Area so well connected. You will get an insider's "before and after" look at renovated BART cars, as well as an opportunity to learn about the new technology of the Fleet of the Future cars, and the history and future of the Bay Area Rapid Transit system. All attendees must wear sturdy, closed-toed shoes. All other PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest) will be provided.

    • Bay Bridge

      • Description: The Eastern Span of the Bay Bridge was completed in 2013 and is a self-anchored suspension bridge with an orthotropic deck. The tour will be comprehensive and will include viewing the bridge from Yerba Buena Island, going down into the deck of the bridge, and riding up to the top of the tower (if weather permits). The tour will be led by Bridge Inspector (and ASCE SF Section President), Ed Thometz.

    • Golden Gate Bridge

      • Description: ​Join us for a tour of one of ASCE’s Seven Wonders of the Modern World! This tour will start with the NSF exhibit at the welcome plaza of the bridge, where you can learn about the history and the engineering behind the bridge. We will also be walking across the Golden Gate. The tour will be led by a Facilities Engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge District.

    • San Francisco’s Next Waterfront Taxi Hub

      • Description: Downtown San Francisco’s new and improved waterfront taxi hub is more than it seems. Specifically referred to as the Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal South Basin Expansion Project, the improved terminal will help revitalize the once world renowned Ferry Building area into an active waterfront taxi (ferry) hub. More importantly, the ferry hub will prepare Downtown San Francisco with the ability to have emergency water transit solutions during a major emergency. A short presentation on the design and construction will be presented followed by a walking tour. The tour will be led by San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA). All attendees must wear sturdy closed-toed shoes, hard hat, safety vest and safety glasses (proper PPE).

    • Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant and Lower Crystal Springs Dam

      • Description: ​Built in 1890, the Harry Tracy Water Treatment Plant and Lower Crystal Springs Dam are historical landmarks that recently underwent significant renovations. The Lower Crystal Springs Dam served as a model for the Hoover Dam and survived the 1989 Loma Prieta and 1906 San Francisco seismic events. The improved treatment plant facility now has the capacity to supply nearly one million people with water for 60 days within 24 hours of a major earthquake. New construction above the dam added a replacement cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete box girder bridge. Join ASCE and the facility’s water operators on a tour to learn about major upgrades, watershed land management, and the history and future of the treatment plant and dam. Attendees will walk around the site, enjoying the beauty spots along the trail and bridge, from where the group will have an excellent vantage point to observe the facilities in operation. No PPE required.

  • Bike Ride Across the Golden Gate Bridge

    • Description: ​Stretch your legs and bike across the world famous Golden Gate Bridge, a feat of civil engineering! The route takes you along San Francisco’s stunning waterfront, across the Golden Gate Bridge and down to the picturesque seaside towns of Sausalito where you will return back to SF via ferry! Plan on lunch in Sausalito before heading back on the Ferry. *Weather Permitting
